Are There Any Treatments for Frequent Urination in Adults?

There are many treatments for frequent urination in adults, with the best treatment depending on the cause of the condition. Some people benefit from changes in their diet, lifestyle, or attitude. Others find that prescription medications are needed to help relieve the urge to urinate and make their lives easier. In extreme cases, surgical intervention may be required.

Lifestyle Changes

Frequent urination can sometimes be remedied by one of various prescription medications, such as antidepressants or hormones.
Frequent urination can sometimes be remedied by one of various prescription medications, such as antidepressants or hormones.

Urologists often suggest that regular exercise and a diet rich in fiber can help maintain healthy digestion. Additionally, avoiding alcohol and caffeine, which are both diuretics, can reduce the urge to go. If ordinary factors have been ruled out, the need to urinate frequently may be an indicator of a medical problem. Many conditions can be responsible for this problem, which is not uncommon, especially in older adults. Worrying about these possibilities will often make the situation worse, however, so it's best to consult with a medical professional.

Treating Urinary Tract Infections

Botox injections can be used to relax the bladder muscles and alleviate frequent urination.
Botox injections can be used to relax the bladder muscles and alleviate frequent urination.

Urinary tract infections (UTIs) are often the culprit when an otherwise healthy patient reports an increase in urination. These infections are usually caused by bacteria, and a number of different antibiotics can be used to treat them. Often, the infection clears up within a few days of treatment, and the urge to urinate should decrease. Some people, especially postmenopausal women and people who use catheters, are prone to recurrent or persistent UTIs, and may require longer term antibiotic treatment.

Treatment for an Overactive Bladder

Pregnancy can cause frequent urination.
Pregnancy can cause frequent urination.

When urinary tract infections have been ruled out, the most common reason for frequent urination is a condition called overactive bladder. In this case, the nerves or muscles that control the bladder overreact to the presence of even small amounts of urine. Although the causes of this condition are still not fully understood, it can often be relieved by one of various prescription medications:

  • Anticholinergics block the chemical messengers that cause the bladder to contract.
  • Some forms of antidepressants cause the muscles in the bladder to relax.
  • Estrogen may enhance nerve function and help some women.
  • The synthetic hormone desmopressin causes the body to produce less urine.

Injections of botulinum toxin, better known as Botox®, have also been used to relax the bladder muscles.

Behavioral Compulsion

Consuming alcohol and caffeine can cause people to urinate more frequently.
Consuming alcohol and caffeine can cause people to urinate more frequently.

Frequent urination can also be caused by a behavioral compulsion. In other words, a person inadvertently "trains" himself or herself to urinate more often than natural bodily processes require. If this is the cause, cognitive behavioral therapy may be the answer: the person can retrain his or her bladder to be less active. In rare cases, the compulsion may be so severe that it qualifies as neurotic behavior. If a medical professional suspects this, he or she may refer the patient to a behavioral therapist or psychologist.

Treating an Enlarged Prostate

Urinary tract infections may be to blame when an otherwise healthy patient reports an increase in urination.
Urinary tract infections may be to blame when an otherwise healthy patient reports an increase in urination.

In men older than 40, reduced bladder control or incontinence can indicate an enlarged prostate gland. While this condition can have many causes, swelling of the prostate can be a sign of prostate cancer, one of the deadliest forms of cancer. For this reason, changes in urination habits should not go unchecked in men of this age group. The treatment for an enlarged prostate depends on the cause and the degree of enlargement, but medications to shrink the gland or relax the neck of the bladder may be used. In some cases, surgery to remove prostate tissue or relieve pressure on the urethra, which passes through the gland, may be used.

Other Medical Conditions

In men older than 40, reduced bladder control or incontinence can indicate an enlarged prostate gland.

Diabetes, Parkinson's disease, multiple sclerosis, and other medical conditions can also create a frequent need to urinate. It's usually necessary to treat the underlying cause, if possible, to relieve any urinary symptoms. In addition, pregnant women find that frequent urination is a common complication of childbearing, caused by the pressure of the fetus on the bladder. Once the child is born, the need to urinate so often usually goes away.

Surgical Remedies

Bladder training is a common overactive bladder treatment.
Bladder training is a common overactive bladder treatment.

There are surgical options are available to patients who are not helped by less invasive therapies like medication or lifestyle changes. One is the sacral nerve stimulator, an artificial regulatory device implanted in the patient to help regulate the bladder muscles. Another procedure is called augmentation cytoplasty.

The placement of a sacral nerve stimulator is similar to the process of inserting a coronary pacemaker, and it serves a similar function. The small device is placed in the patient's abdomen and connected to the sacral nerves, the nerve cells located under the tailbone that control excretion. This stimulator helps regulate nerve responses to the bladder that may have been compromised due to age, injury, or medical conditions.

Some medications prescribed to treat high blood pressure can cause frequent urination in males.
Some medications prescribed to treat high blood pressure can cause frequent urination in males.

Augmentation cytoplasty involves the removal of a small piece of tissue from the bowel, which is then used to enlarge the bladder. With more space to collect urine, the urge to go usually occurs less frequently. After the surgery, many patients need to use a catheter to urinate, however. Urine catheterization is linked to an increased risk of bladder and kidney infections, and because of this, can be even more inconvenient than the initial problem. As a result, this kind of surgery tends to be used only as a last resort.

For the woman who said her husband's tests are normal but she has a uti, it is because of the shape of the penis of your husband. If it is anything but straight, that is the cause. The curved penis irritates the urethral opening and is activating the bacteria biofilm in your bladder.

I'm an 18 year old female, and I had this problem two years ago when I started grade 10. It just happened all of a sudden. I was in class and I really had to go so I went, but after it felt like I still had to go and it was so annoying! It lasted about six months. I told my parents and went to the doctors and did a blood and urine test but everything came back normal, but then it went away for a year and it was a miracle!! But now it's back and I don't know why! It's been almost a month and it has not gone away. It feels a little better when I lie down, but not by much. I just want it to stop. I'm to scared to go out of the house in case I have an accident. It's ruining my life!

I'm a 55 year old man and for the past couple of years I have noticed that I urinate with a greater frequency than before. I usually pee nine to 14 times in a 24 hour period (sometimes three to five times between 11 p.m. and 7 a.m.) and was worried about the reason.

I recently had a physical and my blood tests all came back good, so an enlarged prostate is thankfully out of the question. I then did some research online and was shocked to find out that the fact that I have Multiple Sclerosis is the most probable cause. Thank you to this web site for having the medical reasons and answers to my questions. I'm more aware now than I was and not quite as worried about my need to pee a million times a day.

Females should see a urogynecologist. Males go to see a urologist. Do not rule out a chronic disorder called IC = Interstitial Cystitis. All of the threads above seem to lean toward that condition. You can purchase Azo UTI kit at drug stores...and test your urine for a urinary tract infection. See doc for infection and antibiotics. If no infection and urgency is still there, you likely have IC (stated above), or could have diabetes. Get tested for diabetes. God bless all sufferers.

After urinating about 50 times daily and every hour during sleep, I have concluded that this problem is from either bad health with the heart such as a racing heart or leaky valve and also an overactive bladder emanates from problems in the brain along the lines of OCD, if you are nervous in general.

I am a 27 year old married female and I was just after some advice. For as long as I can remember I have always had frequent urination. I getting urine infections very frequently. Every two weeks I'm having this problem. I always take my medicines on time. Once it's cured, it will come back again. I'm not able to find the reason for it.

My husband's urine culture and semen culture reports are normal. I feel pain and irritation during urine passage. Please tell me the reasons and precautions to get rid of this problem.

I have the same problem. My tests show I am OK, so the only thing left is a psychological thing. I am a very depressed guy, so if you are urinating a lot and are depressed, it could be the reason.

I don't have a problem with night time weeing, but every time I come home from a shopping trip, or have been out for a few hours, as soon as I enter my front doors, I am peeing myself so much, I feel I can't hold it, even if I have just been at the shop.

I reckon there is some kind of curse on our front doors, so as soon as I enter them, it latches on to me, and there is nothing I can do about it except run to the bathroom, and get rid of it, Anyone else had this problem?

I am 27 years old, female and I was just after some advice. For as long as I can remember I have always been a frequent urinator. Even when I was a little girl I remember having to get up in the middle of the night to go to the toilet. I guess it has always bothered me but as it's been a lifelong thing. I'm just used to it. I have seen a doctor he said there was nothing wrong with me, What do I do?

I am a 52-year-old male. I have always had a weak bladder compared to others. The older I have gotten, the more I experience major bladder, pressure even with a small amount of urine in my bladder. Then I started to get pain at the end of my penis and pain in my urinary tract after ejaculation. The worst time was after I went to sleep. The pain and pressure would wake me up when I slept in certain positions. After many doctor's appointments and years of prescription drugs that didn't do a damn thing or made it worse, I came to some of my own conclusions due to my horrible pain, frustration and suicidal thoughts. I had to save myself because western medicine had failed me. I went to an acupuncturist and she treated me with no pain needles, and what I think helped the most were herbs I cooked into a tea that totally cleansed and healed my bladder. I had relief. The pain I had suffered from for years left my body in the first 24 hours.

There are foods you must refrain from: tomato sauce, anything spicy, citrus, caffeine, chocolate, alcohol, carbonation. Remember, everything that goes in your body leaves at least a little through your urinary tract. If you are suffering now, limit greasy foods, fried foods, cheese and beef and drink the hottest water you can. Don't drink cold beverages because it will make bladder spasm. This sounds like a tall order, but my earlier years of too much sex, drugs and alcohol had left my body out of balance and in order to heal, radical behavior had to be taken for me to get in balance again.

Get rid of those dead weight, so-called friends, and be careful of the obligations you commit to. You need lots of alone quiet time to mentally get strong to heal. All the money you make at work won't make a difference when you suffer with bladder issues. I use the analogy that it's like trying to watch a movie and concentrate when someone is ripping your groin out. No one knows the torment we go through. It's like hell on earth.

All those prescription drugs you are on just burn the urethra. My urologist told me I would have to learn to live with it. I almost jumped off the Golden Gate, no lie. I have never blogged before now, but felt wrong about not sharing my experience. Oh yeah, and try not to ejaculate more than two times per week and make sure you complete to orgasm because it will back up your tract and you will be in pain. No long masturbating sessions either, because putting off your orgasm will result in horrible pressure afterward.

Whatever you do, don't hold your pee because it backs up and causes weeks of agony. I have a pee bottle in every car, a yellow pineapple bottle that looks normal if seen in my car. I have regained my mental health because I get sleep now. Also, eat small amounts of food at each setting. Your colon and bladder are so close and the colon with lots of food puts pressure on the bladder. I also get colonics twice a year. Hope this helps someone at the end of their rope.

I am a 23 year old female. For the past two days, I have been waking up in the middle of the night at least three times to urinate, and when I'm at the office I would urinate about 15 to 20 times. Sometimes there is a lot of fluid and sometimes there is not! Could it be that somehow I did not wipe myself properly and has that caused the irritation? But i don't know if this is also caused by me not drinking a lot of water and all i drink is soda, coffee and other junk?

anon202045

I used to have severe urinary incontinence. I went to see two specialist doctors and saw a physical therapist for therapy with no relief. They recommended surgery. I had a myriad of other symptoms too.

About that time, I found out I was gluten intolerant. I quizzed the doctors to see if this could be my problem. They were of no help. After three months of going gluten free, my mystery urinary incontinence symptoms among other symptoms completely resolved. I have not suffered since.

Hope this helps someone out there. I am not a medical person, just someone who experienced this.

Frequent urination can also be a symptom of diabetes. Those who notice they are urinating more and more often, and expelling a great deal of urine, should go to their family doctor for blood work.

When someone is diabetic and has prolonged high blood sugar, the body tries to get rid of the excess glucose in the body by secreting it through the urine -- "spill over" it's called.

So any time urinary habits change noticeably, it's time to see a doctor.

great help already reading this page, so thanks all.

My situation is that i am 24, and need to use the bathroom about 13-19 times per day. I've been keeping a log to show my doctor when i go. i don't drink coffee at all or fizzy drinks or eat fatty foods. I think i have a decent diet and work out four to five times a week. i wet the bed until i was 11 or 12. i wake up at least once to go bathroom every night.

i feel fit and healthy apart from this. i can't go on long car journeys and have stopped drinking altogether (two years now), though i was only ever a social drinker. any thoughts would be appreciated.

Citron: I can identify with all the numerous posts here yet, no doctor has been able find an answer to this basic problem other than more tests and more doctors visits.

Oh yes, more doctors visits equals more money paid to these doctors who are clueless as to what the heck is going on.

You may think with their "white coats" they may have an answer, but heck "no". Tried palmetto supplements and others recommended by my good doctor. These didn't work either. Instead these supplements cut your male sperm quality in half, which is a major problem as a man. A friend tells me to try Magnesium supplement. I’m heading to Walmart to pick up a bottle. I will back in a jiffy if this works. I don't want my good doctor to rip me off again for over eight years with a such basic problem.

I cut off all sodas, sugar, spices etc. etc. etc. intake, as recommended by my doctor including prostate cancer tests. Prostate cancer, “nada” and no help to date. It must be something in all these chemicals in the foods in USA grocery stores.

i don't understand how the body can produce so much urine if I have not had much to drink. Why is it if we are nervous, our body can produce urine like a tap is running. Where does it come from? It ticks me off!

To begin with, I had the exact same symptoms as everyone has listed above. After six days of constant urination both day and night, I went to see my doctor.

After poking and probing, he ran blood and urine tests. finally, an answer, Diabetes! They administered a bag of saline solution which took about and hour and a half.

Prescribed two medications and I slept like a baby last night. Constant urination is gone!

Please everyone, do yourself a favor and see a physician.

Good luck to all.

I 'pee' every two hours at night and just as much during the day. I read in a health magazine that withholding water from your system does not help and that you should drink the normal amount of water you normally drink, but also I saw in the P.C. that drinking too much water could be fatal.

anon151985

I am 52 and recently had a bladder tack and before that diagnosis the doctor checked to see how well my bladder muscles were and it was better than most women.

With that said, I have to get up every two hours on the hour every night when sleeping to go to the bathroom all night long. Sometimes in the daytime I still have little accidents and occasionally first morning pee comes out very very slowly, there is no forcing it, just have to wait it out like nearly five minutes.

anon148885

anon67176! I have the same exact problem! I have to pee constantly! and I use to only drink a bottle of water a day! (Which isn't healthy because we are recommended to drink eight 8 fl ounces or whatever a day) but even with only drinking a small amount, I would still pee like crazy! Sometimes every 10 minutes, and it's even worse when I drink alcohol obviously.

Just this past week I decided to try and drink more water because I am prone to kidney stones, and I need to drink more regardless. So, with that said, I am now having to pee literally every five minutes, so about 10 times in an hour! It's really embarrassing to go out with friends because I always have to go and it's like a big joke now. It's so annoying!

Frequent urination and sometimes pain/burning, when not a urinary tract infection, can be a condition called interstitial cystitis or "IC". I have this condition and have had to go to numerous doctors to finally get the diagnosis.

With a restricted bland diet (no caffeine, alcohol, acidic or spicy foods, no preservatives/artificial colors, etc) and medications like Elmiron, my symptoms have greatly improved. This article is missing this chronic medical condition as a possible cause of urinary frequency.

I get up to pee three/four times a night (although often more out of habit). During the day, as soon as I drink anything (even just one glass of water), I have an urgent, painful need to run to the bathroom.

Often, only three to five minutes later, I'm running back to the bathroom with the same, urgent and painful need to pee and surprisingly, I pee a lot considering I just went three minutes ago.

This cycle repeats itself about three/four times, until the painful urgency eventually goes away. As a result, I'm always dehydrated when I go out because I fear to drink any liquids if I'm walking around or on the subway or in class.

I honestly don't know how my body produces so much urine or why I have to pee again five minutes later! Very annoying and embarrassing!

Get D-Mannose and you will have relief. D-Mannose might not tackle the cause of your infection but it gives you relief as soon as you use it.

Since there are no dates on any of these Posts, I am not sure if this is a dead thread or not. But anyhow this can be beneficial for others, so I must relate my experiences.

I too suffered from very puzzling frequent urination, along with a slew of other issues. These issues have improved immensely simply by taking Sustenex Probiotics. Please if you suffer troubling problems of an unknown origin, give it a shot. You may experience the same life changing benefits that I have.

Pisces, any infection can be serious if it is not treated. However, you need to go to a physician who can diagnose you properly and put you on a course of antibiotics, if that is what is required for you. Only a doctor can tell you what's going on for certain and only a doctor can treat you appropriately for whatever is going on with you.

im very worried about my situation. is kidney or UTI dangerous? how much time will i take to recover. any preventions in food?

anon44414

Pisces, it sounds like you may have a kidney or urinary tract infection. Frequent urination accompanied by burning is often a symptom. You need to see a doctor, who can do a urine culture and bloodwork and determine if you have an infection. Please see a physician right away.

I'm 24 and I feel the need to use the restroom all the time! It's ruling my life. I just want it to end. When i think back it was not like this a year ago although i have always used the restroom more than some people. It feels like i have to pee all the time. It's hard to not go running to the bathroom every 15 minutes sometimes.

Does anyone have any ideas? I'm too young for this! Is it all in my head? or do i have a condition? please let me know, thank you.

Help,

I am 57 years old and have taken every drug available for frequent urination. Nothing works, Dextrol, Enablex, Avodart, nothing works and I am at my wits end. I have had surgery and my problem is even worse.

Has anyone heard of a non-Holistic drug I can try? I did those first with absolutely no effect. My BPH is less than 10%.

Hi everyone, Try taking before bed a small glass of water with a teaspoon of Himalayan salt. It will help you absorb the fluid into your body.

Buy some Himalayan salt and crush it up and add to glass bottle full of water with lid and just pour into their glass when needed.

i am 24 male with problem of frequent urination ...i have to go for 2 times or more per hour. what is the treatment?

anon23872

I'm 41 and I have had problems urinating for many years. Some days i'll go 12 to 14 times a day. If I don't drink my one cup of coffee in the morning, I'll go 8 to 10 times a day. I haven't slept more than 3 or 4 hours at a time for 15 years. I try and drink about 2 to 3 quarts of water a day because I usually feel dehydrated from urinating all the time. Sometimes shortly after I urinate, I feel the urge to go again. I rarely relieve myself fully. Onetime on a 3 hour car ride I had to stop 3 times during the trip. I went before I got in the car too. I can't go on long walks anymore because 40-45 mins into the walk I have to go to the bathroom. I always check to see where bathrooms are when we go to some event or show. I'm scared to go walk around downtown DC because I don't know where the bathrooms might be. I really want to live a normal life soon.

Hi, I am 27 years old, female and I was just after some advice. For as long as I can remember I have always been a frequent urinator, even when I was a little girl I remember having to get up in the middle of the night to go to the toilet. I guess it has always bothered me but as it's been a lifelong thing i'm just used to it so I have never mentioned it to a doctor. I believe however that it's getting worse and I seem to be going more and more often over prob the last 5 years or so. It's quite bad after I drink a coffee so I only have 2 a day in the morning. In the evening when I lay down in bed, sometimes I have to get up 4 or more times before I can get to sleep which is quite frustrating. It occurs during sexual arousal also. I am otherwise healthy, although it was recently detected that I had a grade 3 abnormality on my cervix and am having cells removed through surgery next week. I'm not sure if this could be related as I had previously had normal pap smears. I suppose I should have spoken to a doctor by now but as I said before it's something I am used to I can't imagine life any other way. Obviously when I drink alcohol I am on the toilet all night also, it gets quite embarrassing but the people around me are used to it also. Please email me your thoughts, it would be much appreciated. Thank you.

There are a lot of people too who have frequent urination at night, but not because of the time of day, rather because they are lying down. Something about lying down makes them have to go to the bathroom, and it can be very disruptive to sleep. This is known to happen in older men with prostate problems, but many people don't know that it also happens in women and young women as well as old.
