How do I Treat a Low Platelet Count?

Tricia Christensen

Having a low platelet count means that the blood possesses too few thrombocytes or specialized blood cells called platelets that help to aid in blood clotting. This condition is also called thrombocytopenia, and it can be mild to highly serious, depending on the platelet count and on the underlying cause. Treatment of this condition usually depends on these two factors: cause and severity. There are several treatments possible including “watch and wait,” medications, blood transfusions or platelet transfusions, and surgery.

Very common conditions may result in low platelet count, like pregnancy. The reduction in platelet amounts is usually not huge, and doctors tend to opt not to treat this condition, though they may take a wait and watch approach. Most women do recover from thrombocytopenia caused by pregnancy after the pregnancy ends. Another time this approach could be favored is when people have just had a virus, especially kids, and have mild thrombocytopenia. Children are particularly good at recovering from low counts because their bone marrow tends to produce platelets rapidly.

Medications can be used to treat a low platelet count.
Medications can be used to treat a low platelet count.

Other times, doctors opt to treat low platelets by giving medications. This is particularly the case when people have idiopathic thrombocytopenia purpura (ITP, where the body mistakes platelets as a foreign substance and begins to destroy them). Some medications may cause the body to assume this stance too. When ITP is present, doctors may give medications that turn off this immune response to platelets. In treating ITP, another option is to remove the spleen, which may be aggravating the immune response to platelets and which may help the body stop attacking thrombocytes.

Kidney dialysis may be used if a low platelet count has a serious cause.
Kidney dialysis may be used if a low platelet count has a serious cause.

One of the main approaches to addressing this condition is to give blood transfusions or platelet transfusions. Both may be necessary. Having very low platelets may cause internal bleeding and blood may need to be replaced. Platelet transfusion can also be an important preventative so people do not have internal bleeding. Things like cancer and the treatments for cancer can result in chronic low platelet count, and doctors, knowing this, will often have patients undergo platelet transfusions so patients can avoid severe thrombocytopenia.

A low platelet count may be treated with a blood transfusion.

There are extremely dangerous conditions that involve a low platelet count including thrombotic thrombocytopenic purpura (TTP). This occurs suddenly and may create blood clots throughout the body, which employ most of the body’s platelets. A very low platelet count is the result, and the condition is medically urgent. It tends to be treated with blood transfusions, platelet transfusions and kidney dialysis, to forestall the damage this condition may create. Plasmapheresis, where blood is removed from the body, filtered and returned, is a common part of treatment for TTP too.

My uncle has a platelet count of 90,000. Is this caused by any diseases? What are the remedies for it?

anon360210

I had CABG six years before. I was on blood thinner and cholesterol plus BP medicines. My platelet count was always around 150 for the last 10 years. For the last eight months, it has gone down to 46 and then comes up to 120. It again went down to 70 then to 120 and the same thing happened three times. The doctor says it is ITP. What should I do?

My husband has sickle cell anemia and I bought the papaya leaf extract for him to start taking. He is also on blood thinners. Is it safe for him to be taking lovenox blood thinners with papaya leaf extract?

I have MDS - Myelodysplastic Syndrome - low platelets, with low RBC, and low WBC. Will papaya juice help?

I was been discharged from the hospital recently. Initially, I felt itchy on my hands and toes. We thought it was a low platelet count since I had this the previous year as well.

My platelet count was 138, but the doctor said that these might be decreasing, so we might see a drop in next blood report. The next day, they went down to 45!

The doc was also surprised at seeing such a drop, so I got another blood test and they were 27. They were experiencing a freefall.

Then they went down to 24 and 23 and reached the minimum. From then, on I drank lots of papaya juice, ate Gloye tablets, and my counts started shooting up: 45, then 70, 106, 126, 245! Seriously, these two things are a must for thrombocytopenia.

My nephew (who is a two-year-old boy) platelets count has decreased to 69,000 and red patches were seen on his body a few days ago. He is suffering from fever for some days and now a blood test.

Can you please suggest why his count has decreased and what are the remedies to increase the count and what measures can be taken in the near future to avoid this? Is this anything serious? Please do advise. --Ekta S.

My husband platelets have reduce to 1,000,000. Please let me know the solution to increase the same.

My platelets dropped due to my chemo treatment. They went from 200 to 19 after my chemo session. I had to stay in the hospital for a blood transfusion but it only went from 19 to 36, and I needed them to be at least 100 before I cold continue treatment. So unfortunately, I had to miss my chemo for that week. So my dad ordered me an all natural malt extract with b-12 and hemoglobin. It's an 8 oz jar that looks like syrup. It's also called " Vitaglobina b-12." My platelets went from 36 to 233 in a week, literally five days! It worked miracles! Along with God of course. It's sold online. It normally retails for about $12.99. Seriously, please try this. I took two spoonfuls a day. That's it. Please try it if you are struggling with low platelets.

My name is Iltaf and my son is 12 years old. About seven months ago, red spots were all over his body. The doctor said that his platelets cells were dead and he has something called "ITP".

When we used daltacalten tablets, my son started to recover, but when we stopped the medicine, the platelet counts are low again. Now my son eats papaya leaves, the juice of all vegetables and fruits but his platelets are not recovering. If somebody has any solution, treatment or information about it, please let me know.

anon271672

Papaya leaf juice is very, very effective to increase the platelet count. I suffered from the same thing during my last month of pregnancy. The doctors did my itp and my platelet count was below 15,000. After treatment, it raised to 72,000, but it lowered down to 20,000 the next day.

Somebody suggested papaya leaf juice. After taking it, my platelets went up. Thank god for papaya leaves. It saved my life. Now also, if I feel my platelets might be dropping, I take papaya leaf juice. I know it's very bitter in taste, but very effective and stable.

anon263568

My friend had dengue fever 20 years ago badly and it blew out his immune system. Now he has fibromyalgia.

I remember when someone put his blood under a high powered microscope, the platelets looked crushed and he compared them to chronic fatigue patients' platelets. Now when my friend has symptoms of fibromyalgia, it is like dengue fever in some ways: flu symptoms, bones aching, irritable, fatigue, can't sleep, etc.

I wondered if the various herbal symptoms offered here would help his symptoms of fibromyalgia. Anyone know?

My brother has been admitted to the hospital. He has ttp and a count of 16,000 platelets and doctor started steroids as the initial medicine.

I want to know what is the success rate of steroids in ttp disease, and what diet should be given to a ttp patient.

anon232748

I was diagnosed with TTP back in 1998. Doctors here in Jacksonville, Florida didn't know much about it. They were very concerned that I could die. They started researching and were able to diagnose and treat my disease with plasmathesis and blood transfusions within hours. They said I would have an episode every five years. It's been every six years, almost exactly.

I just had my most recent episode Dec of 2010 and was not released from the hospital until mid January, 2011. My previous episode had occurred in December, 2004.

With my last episode, I just thought I had a stomach virus. I was throwing up and had a fever and little chest pains. At that time, I had not noticed any bruising. I went to work not feeling well and passed out in the bathroom. They called 911 and the EMT said my blood pressure was extremely high.

They rushed me to the nearest hospital (St. Luke's). My disease continues to progress and I was told that it would get worse as I aged. I just turned 40 in December and was hospitalized two weeks after my birthday. The symptoms have become harder to recognize and my complications have worsened. I have not felt the same since my last episode. I have very little energy, I tire easily even with regular walking exercise. I have regular chest pains now. I bruise from time to time for no reason.

My next episode is due to occur in December 2016. I no longer have a job and no health insurance. I always experience allergic reactions to the plasma but it was much worse this last episode and I almost went into cardiac arrest. Nurses and doctors came rushing in from everywhere. My blood pressure was constantly high and that had never happened before.

I'm afraid that I may not survive the next episode. I know that doctors don't know enough about the disease to tell me what my life expectancy is with this disease.

My great grandmother died of this disease when my grandmother was five, but they didn't know what it was back then or how to treat it. It is a very serious disease and I am very afraid that it could occur sooner that expected and I won't know it's occurring. If you have the disease or suspect you may have it, please take it serious and seek the advice of a doctor. You can die from it.

My wife had our baby nearly 12 weeks ago and had an unexplainable and severely large bleed six hours after birth (approx.2L was lost). Three weeks ago, she had a pap smear test and her blood levels were normal. Three weeks later she is covered in bruises and has been admitted in hospital with a platelet level of 8. Has anyone else had a similar episode or any ideas how we can help treat this? She is currently on steroids.

anon217086

I have a friend with a low platelet count and has renal-kidney related disease. I have been surfing the net like crazy to get a better understanding of the right diet for such problem, but to my disappointment I have become more confused about it. Some strongly suggest using papaya or its juice or leaf, etc. to increase the platelets. Some strongly say to ignore such suggestions. What do we do? Why is there so much of a difference in opinion for something which is common and a single health issue?

With due respect to the profession, I want to know if there is no experienced doctor reading all this? Can doctors not give actual suggestions for people who are begging to know the facts of diets? It's really disappointing.

Suggestions given here cannot be taken to the extreme as it could be unsuitable to someone's system. We understand that. However, can it not be tried in small quantities just to make an attempt to trying save our lives?

A doctor's advice will help us have a better understanding and it does not mean that we don't take medication at all after papaya or bitter gourd etc.. Medication is the most important thing but to make it more effective or rather support to recover soon, these natural diets may help, I suppose. Please correct me if I am wrong. No offense to anyone.

Papaya leaves work! My brother had severe bleeding from nose, ears, mouth, stomach, urine due to what doctors call ITP. He had blood transfusions, platelet transfusion. Immunoglobulins, steroids. They went up and down from 7-18 -- never more. Then we read on the internet about papaya leaves extract helping people with dengue fever. We had nothing to lose, nothing else was working and we were running out donors and money for expensive platelet transfusions.

We washed papaya leaves, used a juice extractor and gave him two tablespoons a day. The blood in his urine and mouth bleeding reduced after three days. We increased to two tablespoons two times a day. Everything stopped.

Although his platelets are not back to normal (150 - 400) they have increased from a dangerously low 11 to 50. Maybe because he is not taking as regularly as before. At least he is out of the danger zone. Please try this if all else fails. You have nothing to looe. We want to try the papaya extracts and I will post here on the results.

In reference to comment anon133365 post 46, my son at age 14 got Aplastic Anemia. He was treated with a drug named Anadrol-50 for one year and his platelet count went from 9,000 to 140,000 in that one year period, it cured him of the disease and he is fine today. Maybe that same drug can help you with your disease. I pray that it can.

I have had itp my whole life. I got it when I was 8 and did not get out of bed for six months and then three more times. I've just been sent to the docs and again I have a count of 0 and they found bleeding in my head and a lot of bleeding has happened this time. I have left it too long. It took me three days to go see someone. After almost dying two times this week I won't do it again. I will be going under the knife in a fee days' time and they just want to get it over and done with. They say they don't know if thay cut me open when i have a count of 0 if it will kill me.

I only just turned 16 and live by myself with this and I'm only just hanging on to my life. I would like to know what people can tell me about this.

Two Asian friends I know had ITP, both tried papaya leaf extract, and it worked for them. They saw results within days. I don't know if it only works for Asians, but I would doubt it. I believe they bought organic capsules from the herbal papaya online store. If there is even a slight chance papaya leaf extract works, why don't the doctors tell people?

Low platelet count can occur with Gaucher disease, which affects the production of platelets. I had my spleen removed and the platelet count rose. Unfortunately after medication taken for a minor stroke at the end of October the platelets are falling again. It is now a game of wait and see to see if the count improves by itself or a change

made in the medication.

i was admitted in the hospital at platelet count of 26, (with bleeding nose and gums) the doctor suspected it was dengue and immediately transfused six bags of blood. After that my platelet decreased to 18,(and I had a rash all over my body --even my eyes) and transfused another 16 bags of blood, but that had no effect.

After nine days of a roller coaster platelet result, the higher results were 40. on my 10th day in the hospital, the doctor said i had ITP. Prednisone was given to me, and my platelet count went from 18 to 86 to 118 to 180. after a week of not taking prednisone, my platelet decreased to 18.

I'm worried because my doctor said i have to blood transfused again, but i requested to have prednisone, as I am not ready to stay in the hospital again. After a week my platelet count become 86 with the prednison. The following week i drink papaya leaf extract daily, and surprisingly my platelet count become 242. My doctor couldn't believe that my platelet count rapidly increasing. And I am still taking papaya leaf extract.

You guys need to listen! My platelet count went to 10 and i suffered a severe brain bleed. I was induced into a coma, and awoke paralyzed on my right side.

Currently, my platelets are at 85, and i still fear another bleed. I had one last year when at this number.

This is a dangerous situation. Papaya leaves will do nothing for you, but a hospital will save your life.

Have you ever heard of a papaya leaf saving someone from a brain bleed? I don't think so. Listen to the experts.

Good luck.

Tawa tawa herbal medicine here in the philippines are widely used in curing DHF. The doctors here are not recommending it but still they are optimistic of the curing effects. A lot of people, including dengue patients, have testified that tawa tawa tea cured them or at least helped them survive DHF. The tawa tawa herb has a tea bag available here in the philippines from herbal stall inside the malls. Maybe it can raise the level of platelets since DHF attacks the platelets causing them to decrease.

Calling the attention of bill and melinda gates foundation, please help in studying the effects of the tawa tawa leaf.

I had tick fever five years ago and my platelets went down to 2000, when it should be 15,000 to 300,000 or even more.

I was six days in the hospital, with prednisone and chemo treatment. note the chemo they gave me and others I have talked to is not a hot chemo like we all think of when we hear chemo. It came back up gradually.

But this spring I began bleeding, gums first, blood in blowing nose next, blood on my ear swabs next, and on toilet tissue next,a pin prick never stops oozing, then particular, reddish spots on my skin, first legs and on up to face and head.

I went in again. This time almost 0 platelets. They gave me outpatient shots, at $5,000 each which is like speed for your bone marrow. Then one round of the chemo again. My platelets game up again. The doc says it may never happen again or next week. It's been nine months and I seem to be OK. Like everyone else, I see the gimmicks on the market but the papaya leaf may be OK. I may try it.

The doctor said it was OK and that it was nothing to worry about.

Tawa-Tawa is another effective herbal plant that is widely known for its fine properties as an aid in the healing process of a dengue fever victim who are often diagnosed through their low blood platelet count.

The Tawa-Tawa plant known in English as Asthma Weed with scientific name Euphorbia hirta Linn is usually taken in decoction but is now available in capsules.

A few research proves that Euphorbia hirta Linn can significantly increase the blood's platelet count upon regular intake.

About a year ago my mom was searching for information on things I could eat to bring up my platelet count because I was missing chemo because they were too low. She found info on papaya leaf extract and my grandfather ordered some from Mountain Meadow Herbs (which is much cheaper on amazon than on their website). I was very skeptical, but tried it anyway.

Putting about 1 tablespoon in my sweet tea every day after chemo. Usually I would drop to 10,000 - 30,000 platelets per mcL at the end of the chemo week and a week later my body on it's on or with a transfusion would bring them up to about 60,000 per mcL.

After the papaya extract it would bring them to about 100,000 - 160,000 per mcL. I did find if you're on a chemo that attacks platelets very badly, don't take it the week after chemo, it will go even lower sometimes. Take it after your counts have dropped about as much as they are going to. I don't know about fresh papaya, we were only able to get a hold of premade extract but it seems to work as well as the reports I've heard about the fresh leaf extract.

I emailed earlier asking about papaya leaf extract. I also meant to ask where I can get papaya leaves delivered to me in colorado. It may be a better solution than ordering extract, if possible.
