What Are the Common Causes of Low Semen Volume?

Low semen volume is a relatively common issue for men of any age, although this problem does appear to become more prevalent as a man ages. Hormone problems such as low testosterone levels account for the majority of cases. Additional causes may include frequent sexual activity, nutritional deficiencies, or injury to the testicles. Tight clothing, heat, or infection may also affect the normal production of semen. Any questions or concerns about low semen volume on an individual basis should be discussed with a doctor or other medical professional.

Testosterone is a naturally occurring hormone that is primarily responsible for male reproductive health. Reduced testosterone levels may lead to this condition in some men. Hormone replacement therapy can correct this hormone imbalance for most men, although a complete medical examination is necessary in order to rule out any potentially serious underlying medical conditions.

Men should include enough food containing zinc and selenium in their diets to help prevent low semen volume.

Frequent sexual activity, including masturbation, may contribute to this condition. If reducing the frequency of sexual activity does not increase semen volume, a doctor should be consulted for further medical evaluation. Nutritional deficiencies, especially involving selenium and zinc, may account for lowered semen volume in some situations. Obesity and a chronically unhealthy diet are frequently responsible for fertility issues such as low semen volume. Heredity or chronic stress may be responsible for lowered semen production, although other potential causes must be ruled out before considering this as a possibility.

Any injury involving the testicles or surrounding tissue may lead to low semen volume. This type of injury should always be reported to a doctor in order to rule out potentially serious complications. The testicles should remain cooler than the rest of the body, so testicular exposure to heat may lead to decreased semen production and fertility problems. Tight clothing can have a negative impact on the production of semen, especially if worn on a regular basis. Men who experience this problem may benefit from wearing loose-fitting underwear such as boxer shorts, especially if infertility is a concern.

Wearing tight pants on a regular basis can be a factor in low semen volume.

Infections affecting any area of the male urinary or reproductive system may cause problems with semen production. Treatment with antibiotics will normally resolve the issue. In some cases, a blockage or tumor may be contributing to the problem. In these rare cases, surgical intervention may be needed, either to preserve fertility or to save the life of the patient. As a man ages, the volume of semen naturally decreases, but any concerns should always be discussed with a doctor or medical professional.

Very little of your semen comes from the testicles. The testes only produce sperm.

I hate those sayings like I exercise regularly or play golf. That makes no difference at all. The problem starts when the nitrogen overtakes the testosterone.

I am 26 years old, and my semen volume took a dive in the last two months. It's now a fifth of what it used to be. Also, while my urine stream is adequate, there is definitely a decrease in flow rate, and a sense of not fully emptying.

But I've also had some abdominal floor muscle tightening. I have no family history of prostate issues, but similar bowel floor muscle issue and urinary symptoms. I don't know about the semen volume, though.

I'm sick of reading "I exercise regularly," as though that makes any difference. I was lumped with this 15 years ago, and it's been like a see saw ever since. I wouldn't wish it on my worst enemy. There is no cure.

After hernia surgery 15 years ago, I noticed that my semen was only 50 percent of what it was before surgery. It has been the same to this day. The doctor said he used some of my muscles around the testicles to patch the

hernia. I was too embarrassed at the time to mention it. Occasionally, I experience an itch at the base of my scrotum. The itch seems to come from the inside of the skin. Could the spermatic cord have been severed and leaking sperm? My testicles were hanging half way to my knees for several weeks.

@ddljohn-- Are you taking any supplements or hormones for workouts or bodybuilding?

I know that some supplements that bodybuilders use decrease testosterone levels and the semen volume goes way down until they're off of them.

@ddljohn-- When you're past fifty, you have to expect a decrease in semen volume. It's normal, it's a part of aging. I'm fifty-six and I've been noticing a decrease in the past few years. It doesn't bother me though because it has no negative affect on my sexual life.

I have a couple of friends around my age who are going through the same thing though and they are freaking out. Two of them have been trying random supplements to try to increase their semen volume. I personally think they need to just accept it and move on, it's not the end of the world.

In the past month, my semen volume has decreased a lot, I would say by about one-third.

I'm not young but I really wasn't expecting this kind of change so I'm worried. I had a general check-up recently and my doctor says I'm very healthy. I eat healthy and exercise regularly, I have no chronic illnesses.

Is there anything I can do to increase my semen volume back to what it was before?
