When my mom had gallbladder surgery, it was outpatient. I think they kept her about two hours after she left the recovery room.
She didn't want to stay overnight, and since the surgery was laparoscopic, the doctor was OK with her going home.
She felt much better, and I think her recovery was fast than if she had to stay in the hospital. If possible, I know patients rest better at home, and if their condition permits, I am all for them going home once the doctor determines it's safe for them to do so.
